La Reina Roja

La Reina Roja (The Red Queen) is an audiovisual project created by Universitat Oberta de Catalunya (UOC) to raise awareness of innovative educational experiences around the world and reflect on online education with national and international experts.

The programme is an initiative of Lluís Pastor, director of the UOC eLearn Center, and takes its name from the book La Reina Roja (Editorial UOC, 2017), by Guillem Garcia Brustenga, head of the centre’s Research and Analysis of Trends team. The book is a collection of interviews with seven experts in technology, network economy and education, reflecting on the role education should play in personal development and preparing people for an increasingly uncertain job market.

Metaphor

“Faster! Faster!”
When Lewis Carroll’s exhausted Alice realises, after running alongside the Red Queen for some time, that they’re right where they started, she says to the queen, “In our country, you’d generally get to somewhere else if you ran very fast for a long time.” To which the queen replies, “Now, here, you see, it takes all the running you can do to keep in the same place. If you want to get somewhere else, you must run at least twice as fast as that!”.

This excerpt from Through the Looking-Glass is a good metaphor for the exponential global growth we are currently seeing in terms of society, economy and technology. We live in a world that has been seriously accelerated by technology and this is having and will continue to have an impact on all areas of our lives at a speed that makes the consequences hard to predict. This includes education and the educational system in the short, middle and long term.

*Excerpt from the prologue of La Reina Roja (Editorial UOC, 2017)

“Now, here, you see, it takes all the running you can do to keep in the same place. If you want to get somewhere else, you must run at least twice as fast as that!”.
